The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is a robust inline sensor for continuous concentration measurement of liquids in hazardous areas. It records sound velocity and temperature directly in the medium. The LiquiSonic® controller continuously calculates the concentration value from this, without time-delayed laboratory analysis.

The sensor is installed directly in tanks or pipelines and operates without moving or optical components. Because the measurement is based on sound velocity, the method is independent of the optical properties of the medium such as color or turbidity. With approvals according to ATEX, IECEx, and FM, the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is suitable for measuring points in hazardous areas, for example with flammable solvents or in processes in which hydrogen or other explosive gases may occur. Different materials, process connections, and installation lengths allow adaptation to the respective measuring point.

The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is used wherever liquid concentrations need to be monitored continuously while also meeting explosion protection requirements. Typical applications include:

Alkaline electrolysis – KOH monitoring in hydrogen production

In alkaline electrolysis, the KOH concentration is a key process variable for stable and efficient electrolyzer operation. The LiquiSonic® measurement system continuously monitors the electrolyte concentration and makes it possible to detect concentration changes immediately. In plant areas classified accordingly as hazardous, the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex provides the required Ex version for inline measurement.

Solvent distillation and recovery

During the processing and recovery of organic solvents, LiquiSonic® monitors the concentration or composition directly in the process. Typical media include, for example, acetone, ethanol, toluene, n-hexane, or ethyl acetate. For measuring points in hazardous plant areas, a correspondingly approved sensor variant is available with the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex.

Petrochemicals and crude oil processing

In petrochemischen Anlagen und bei der Rohölaufbereitung ermöglicht der Sensor die kontinuierliche Überwachung von Flüssigkeiten und Prozesszuständen. Typische Messaufgaben sind beispielsweise die Überwachung von Öl-Wasser-Emulsionen oder die Erkennung unterschiedlicher Flüssigkeitsphasen. Für Messstellen in explosionsgefährdeten Bereichen eignet sich der Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex als robuste Inline-Sensorlösung.

Chlor-alkali electrolysis and chlorine gas drying

In chlor-alkali electrolysis, the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex can be used, among other things, for continuous concentration monitoring of process solutions. In chlorine gas drying as well, our LiquiSonic® measurement system enables continuous control of the sulfuric acid concentration. Different sensor materials and special materials are available for corrosive process conditions.

Sulfuric acid processes in hazardous areas

In the production, processing, and recovery of sulfuric acid, the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex can be used if the measuring point is located in a hazardous plant area. Continuous inline measurement makes it possible to detect concentration changes immediately. The sensor design can be adapted to the respective process conditions in terms of material, installation length, and process connection.

The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex can be integrated directly into tanks or pipelines. Different process connections and installation lengths allow the sensor to be adapted to various plant geometries and measuring points.

By default, the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is available with the following process connections:

• DN 50 flange
• ANSI 2"

Additional process connections are available on request.

Installation lengths

The standard installation length is 92 mm. The following installation lengths are optionally available:

• 150 mm
• 250 mm
• 500 mm
• 1000 mm
• 1500 mm
• 2000 mm

The required installation length depends on the geometry of the measuring point. Relevant factors include, for example, nozzle length, wall thickness, pipe or tank diameter, as well as the desired position of the sensor head in the medium.

The right sensor design for your measuring point

Medium, Temperatur, Druck, Anlagengeometrie und Konzentrationsbereich unterscheiden sich von Prozess zu Prozess. Deshalb kann der Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex mit unterschiedlichen Werkstoffen, Prozessanschlüssen und Einbaulängen an die jeweilige Anwendung angepasst werden.

Material options

The parts of the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex that come into contact with the medium can be made in different materials. This allows the sensor to be adapted to the chemical and thermal requirements of the respective application. The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is available as standard in stainless steel or Hastelloy available. Optionally, titanium, tantalum, zirconium, and Monel as well as additional special materials on request are available.

Which material is suitable depends in particular on the medium, concentration range, operating temperature, pressure, and other process conditions. SensoTech therefore coordinates the material selection individually for the respective measurement task.

The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex is an inline ultrasonic sensor for continuous concentration measurement of liquids in hazardous areas. It measures sound velocity and temperature directly in the process and is approved according to ATEX, IECEx, and FM for corresponding Ex applications.

How does the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex work?

The sensor continuously measures the sound velocity of the medium as well as its temperature. Since the sound velocity depends on the composition or concentration of a liquid, the LiquiSonic® Controller calculates the respective concentration value from it. The measured values are available in real time and can be transmitted to the process control system.

How does the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex differ from the Immersion Sensor 40-14

Both sensors operate according to the same ultrasonic measurement principle and are available with comparable materials, process connections, and installation lengths. The key difference lies in the design and explosion protection. In the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex, both the sensor head and sensor shaft have a diameter of 40 mm. It is also approved for hazardous areas. In the Immersion Sensor 40-14, the diameter of the sensor head is likewise 40 mm, while the sensor shaft is 14 mm. The 40-14 is intended for non-hazardous areas.

Which applications is the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex suitable for?

Typical application areas include alkaline electrolysis, solvent distillation and recovery, petrochemicals and crude oil processing, chlor-alkali processes, chlorine gas drying, as well as other chemical processes with Ex requirements. Carbon capture, amine scrubbing, monomer monitoring, gas scrubbers, and fertilizer processes are also possible applications depending on zone classification.

Which Ex approvals does the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex have?

The Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex has ATEX, IECEx, and FM approvals and can therefore be used in appropriately classified hazardous areas. The Ex marking, equipment category, gas group, and temperature class applicable to a specific installation depend on the respective sensor version and should be verified based on the current certificates and the zone classification of the measuring point.

What temperatures and pressures is the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex suitable for?

The standard temperature range of the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex extends from −20 °C to 120 °C. Versions for temperatures up to 150 °C are optionally available. The standard operating pressure is 16 bar; versions up to 500 bar are optionally available. In addition, for Ex applications, the permissible ambient and operating conditions for the respective version must be taken into account.

Does the LiquiSonic® Controller also have to be installed in the Ex area?

No. The sensor and controller can be installed separately. The LiquiSonic® Controller is often installed outside the hazardous area, for example in a control room or electrical room. Suitable enclosure variants are also available for field installations. The specific installation depends on the zone classification and the requirements of the respective plant.

Can gas bubbles, turbidity, or solids affect the measurement?

Color and turbidity do not affect the ultrasonic measurement principle. Suspensions can also be monitored depending on the specific measurement task. Gas bubbles can generally affect sound propagation. LiquiSonic® therefore has special signal processing to detect and reduce this influence. Especially in applications such as alkaline electrolysis, the installation situation is also taken into account to achieve stable measurement conditions.

Can a medium also be measured for which no product data set is yet available?

In principle, new media and concentration ranges can also be investigated. SensoTech can analyze liquids in its own laboratory and create an application-specific product data set based on the measurement data. In doing so, it is checked whether the respective measurement task can be solved clearly and reliably across the desired concentration and temperature range.

Does the Immersion Sensor 40-40 Ex need to be maintained or calibrated regularly?

The immersion sensor has no moving or optical components and is designed for low-maintenance continuous operation. Regular recalibration in the traditional sense is usually not required. Inspection and maintenance intervals depend on the process conditions, the plant's operating requirements, and, if applicable, the requirements for equipment in hazardous areas.

How many sensors can be connected to a LiquiSonic® Controller?

The LiquiSonic® Controller 30 and Controller 40 can manage up to four sensors. This makes it possible to monitor multiple measuring points via a shared evaluation unit, for example different process stages or the supply and return lines of a circuit.
